The Respiratory System

The primary job of the respiratory system is to provide oxygen to the bloodstream and remove carbon dioxide as a waste material. Oxygen is essential to every cell in our bodies because it allows nutrients to be "burned," providing the necessary energy for the cell to function. Deprived of oxygen, our body tissues die in minutes. When the cells burn their fuel, they give off carbon dioxide, a waste material that is picked up by the bloodstream and transported back to the lungs for elimination. Thus, the lungs are an organ of both assimilation (absorbing oxygen) and elimination (removing carbon dioxide). This process is known as respiration. Respiration or "breathing" requires a great deal of space in the body and uses more energy than we may realize. We take in air through our nose and mouth, then it travels through the larynx (our voice box) down the trachea and into the two bronchial passages in the lungs. These tubes have unique qualities that make breathing easier for us. Rings of cartilage surround each passageway to keep it open at all times. The airways are also lined with a mucus membrane to catch dust, germs, and other foreign particles that otherwise would enter the body each time we opened our mouths or took a breath. These particles are trapped in the mucus and then moved upward by tiny hair-like projections called cilia. Cilia also line the sinuses. The sinuses normally push mucus to the back of the throat, while the lungs push the mucus to the top of the air passageway. The mucus is then swallowed and expelled by the digestive tract.
